Azulejos - Gallery Almada Negreiros Consulate General of Portugal, Toronto, Ontario
Custodio is now pleased to present new work to be shown at the Gallery Almada Negreiros Consulate General of Portugal in May, 2008. Custodio's latest project references the old tradition of tile making that dates back to 18 century Portugal. These tile murals or Azulejos, depicted religious scenes, mythical stories and important events in history. One just needs to walk into any Portuguese community in Toronto to see the tiled colleges mounted in front of the homes of the Portuguese. This demonstrates how the tiles, as well as, other Portuguese arts and crafts are still being used today.
Custodio has now used this technique to convey his ideas around men and labor. Labor as work, in order to support the family and labor as passion in the form of Gardening. The images depict portraits of Custodio reenacting experiences that his father and the men of his past lived through. These experiences were passed down to him through stories and viewed through old family photos. Custodio uses traditional title patterns and his own contemporary images to create these modern day story murals. By printing his images onto titles and mounted them, Custodio turns his art practice into a laborious method connecting the tradition of labor to his patrilineal history.
